A new world-jazz album in progress

Due to a data crash :-( - the final mixing days of the album will be moved to early May. Just some small adjustment left on some of the eleven new tunes that will be included on the album. The plan is to release it in Scandinavia in august - and a bit later in the rest of the world. The album will be licensed to Ozella Music (Germany)

Karl Seglem is working in the studio this week. He hopes to finish his new album during spring. New compositions, new sounds made together with his quintet and no less then 3 different drummers/percussionists: Ekornes, Skullerud and Dahlen.
Seglem also use three different goat horns and hope to blow the antilope horn too! Some of the songs are recorded during his Germany tour in 2008 - and some are brand new.

Skoddeheimen

About the music on the forthcoming CD “Skoddeheimen”

My encounter with Ola Hunderi and the story of his life with Inger Anne before and after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease has had a profound impact on me as a person and as an artist. It is a powerful experience to literally watch how her illness progressed through the pictures she painted. It is equally powerful to read about it in the words of Ola. The description of “the path into the land of mist”, also in his poems, is written beautifully, openly and soberly.

Setting these pictures and words to music is a great challenge. Actually, I am not sure that it is even possible. The words, pictures and music must each function individually, in their own universe, before they can be combined into a common idiom. So in this CD I have tried to create independent sounds and different lines that both diverge from the story and, in some ways, perhaps most effectively through contrasts, summarise it or evoke similarities with it. The course of the story runs from the upbeat, exuberant and fantastic to the difficult, hopeless and darkly bleak. But in the final analysis, it is really about the love between two people. And love is and remains the most beautiful of all things.

I hope that the music on the CD can provide food for thought, and perhaps some consolation, while also opening up a space for contemplation within the listener. And I hope that we never cease to be amazed by life, art – and love.

NEW ALBUM IN MAY 2009

Journalist Terje Mosnes has said that he defines Norwegian jazz as the music that is being played by Norwegian jazz musicians at any given time, with their multitude of distinctive voices. Seglem has always considered himself to be a jazz musician in the sense that he can improvise. He has never felt that it was important to put a label on his music. But since it is the case that many people want their music placed neatly in a category before they listen to it, he has decided to simplify matters for everyone by calling the new album norskjazz.no (Norwegian Jazz Now ). It will be out in Scandinavia May 25.

LOST AND FOUND IN NORWAY
Karl Seglem and Terje Isungset

Pieces of driftwood, goat-horns and soundsculptures
made of ice are some of the musical materials used by the
percussionist Terje Isungset and saxofon-player
Karl Seglem. They approach the borders of jazz,
traditional folkmusic and free improvisation.
By including the untamed Norwegian nature, 'forgotten'
sounds turn into musical landscapes.
During minus-degrees in wintertime Terje Isungset carves
ice-instruments, eliciting soft warm tones from them.
At the same time he works with musicians from China
and Nigeria.
Karl Seglem, tenorsax-player, invites traditional
instrumentalists like the hardanger-fiddler
Hakon Hoegemo, to create sounds never heard before.
A meeting of oscillating harmonics and raw sounds
from nature together with influences of jazz -
out comes a kind of 21st-century grooving 'folk'music.
Now and then the two wild Northern guys get
together to make their raving projects come true.
